Who can use MASONLIVE?

    MASONLIVE is available to all active students at George Mason University. It is the official Mason student email system.

    *You will be considered an active student until you have not taken a class for one year. At that time your MASONLIVE account will be closed and ProPlus license removed as part of our regular closure process. Alumni after December 2010 will retain only their email accounts.

Why use the MASONLIVE student email?

    Your George Mason University MASONLIVE email account is the official means of campus communication. Important information regarding registration, billing, coursework, and other university announcements will only be delivered to this account.

What is included with the MASONLIVE account?

    Your MASONLIVE account provides the basic email, calendar, contacts. It also includes a license to utilize Office 365 ProPlus. 

What is my MASONLIVE email address?

    Your email address will be your NetID followed by @masonlive.gmu.edu. (example: gmason@masonlive.gmu.edu). You also have an email alias setup so if someone emails NetID@gmu.edu it will also be delivered to you.

How do I log in to my MASONLIVE student email account?

    After you set up your MASONLIVE email and login for the first time you will be able to connect to your MASONLIVE account in several different ways:


    Through the website:

    Connect to masonlive.gmu.edu. Select the 'Login here with your MASONLIVE account' button and use your full email address (NetID@masonlive.gmu.edu) and your MASONLIVE Microsoft Password.

    You can also access your MASONLIVE account directly through the Outlook web site (http://outlook.office365.com). You will need to type in your full email address (NetID@masonlive.gmu.edu) and your MASONLIVE Microsoft Password (this is not your Patriot Pass password).


    Through your mobile device: 

    You can add your MASONLIVE account to your mobile device by following the setup instructions and more details on our mobile device tutorial.


    Please note: Be sure to log off any other Microsoft accounts, i.e., Hotmail, before logging in to your MASONLIVE account.

Can I forward my email out of MASONLIVE and into another account?

    Yes, but if you forward your MASONLIVE student email to another account, official email may get caught and eliminated by the spam filters used by the receiving account. You may choose to forward your account via a rule in MASONLIVE (this can be found under the gear icon).

I need an accessible version of MASONLIVE. Is that available?

    Yes, if you login on MASONLIVEvia a browser it has an option to select a simplified interface. Under the settings gear you will see a feature called Light Version. Light version is designed for older web browsers, low-bandwidth connections and accessibility needs.

How do I set up a safe senders list in MASONLIVE?

What is Clutter?

    Clutter is an email-filtering option designed to help you focus on the most important messages in your inbox. It uses algorithms based on your email reading habits to learn to de-clutter your inbox by moving lower priority messages out of your way and into a new Clutter folder. Essentially, Clutter acts as a secondary junk mail filter that moves your less important emails out of your INBOX so you can focus on what matters most.

What is the maximum size message and attachment I can send?

    In MASONLIVE, the maximum size for any single email message including attachments is 25 MB. The mail client (ex. Outlook, Apple Mail etc.) you use to send messages may also impose a limit on the size of any single attachment. For Outlook Web App (OWA), the single attachment limit is 10 MB. For example, a message may have two 10 MB attachments (total = 20 MB), but not a single 15 MB attachment as that would exceed the single attachment limit. This is subject to change.

How do you determine who has both a MASONLIVE and an Office 365 account and where the email goes?

    The following table outlines the process for determining email accounts at MASON:

Why should I activate my MASONLIVE account if I already have an Office 365 account?

    If you do not activate your MASONLIVE account, you may miss important messages from your professors. Or if you are teaching, students may email your MASONLIVE account. You can always forward your MASONLIVE account to your Office 365 account.

    Users may always set up an inbox rule in MASONLIVE to forward email to their Office 365 account. For more information, please see the MASONLIVE tutorials.

    Additionally, you may use an email client application such as Outlook, which allows for multiple accounts to be accessed via single application while keeping the mailboxes themselves separate. Most mobile devices also provide this functionality (e.g., multiple email accounts accessed via a single iPhone).

What happens if I am no longer a Mason employee—will my Office 365 account go away?

    Office 365 accounts should remain active only while you are an active employee. Once your employment with the university ends, your Office 365 account will be closed. You will continue to have access to your MASONLIVE account as long as you are a student.

How do I reset my password?

    To reset your MASONLIVE Microsoft Password, please follow the detailed instructions in the tutorials section.

How can I use mail clients such as Outlook with my MASONLIVE account?

    Outlook is the supported email client. Use Exchange protocol to access all features. Other clients may support limited features through the use of IMAP. (detailed instructions can be found in the tutorials section)

What happens if I change my name?

    If you had a legal name change and already had the Registrar make the change you can request a NetID change so it will reflect your new name. If you would like to change the way your name is displayed, you can do so by following the How to Change Your Display Name tutorial.

Can I check my email using my mobile device?

    Yes. Please see Mason's mobile device site for set-up instructions for the most popular devices. If your device is not listed, please visit Microsoft's mobile device set-up wizard. When configuring MASONLIVE email on your mobile device you must use your full email address (NetID@masonlive.gmu.edu) and your MASONLIVE Microsoft Password. MS Office 365 ProPlus

What is Office 365 ProPlus?

    Office 365 ProPlus is a software subscription available via a partnership between George Mason University and Microsoft’s Student Advantage Program to provide Microsoft Office to current students at no cost during their enrollment period.

Is this a full version of Office that will be available on my computer (not just online)?

    Yes, this is full Office on the PC, Mac, iPhone, and Android platform and all are available for offline use.

Will I be able to use Skype/Lync?

    No, not at this time. While Skype/Lync is included as part of the ProPlus software package, George Mason students do not currently have the license needed to utilize the software.

If I have an older version of Microsoft Office on my computer, can I still download and install Office 365 ProPlus?

    Depending on the version you are running it is possible that it will allow you to install another version although it is not recommended. The newest version, Office 2016 for Windows, will walk you through the uninstallation process of any previous versions.

    We suggest not uninstalling your previous version of Office unless you have your product key available to reinstall it at a later date.

Will it uninstall my existing copy of Office?

    Some versions of Microsoft Office will not run alongside previous installations. 

    Office for Mac will allow you to run multiple versions, you will notice it may change your file associations and set itself up as default however, which makes it look as if your previous copy of Office isn't there any more. If you check in programs/applications list, you should see both versions.

    Office for Windows will walk you through the process of uninstalling any previous versions during the install of the new one.

How many devices can I install Office on?

    You can install Office on up to five machines which can be Windows or Mac or a combination of both. You can also run Office Mobile for Android or Office Mobile for iPhone on up to five mobile devices. Activations can be managed from your MASONLIVE email account.

What happens after I graduate or leave the university?

    The Office 365 ProPlus software is free through the Student Advantage program as long as your student account is active*. Once you graduate or leave the university, your student status will be changed to inactive. At that time you will not be able to install new instances of Office 365 ProPlus. On the devices you already have Office 365 installed you will not be able to create/save/edit files. At that time you will be prompted to enter a product key to re-install a previous version of Microsoft Office or purchase Office at a retail store.

    *You will be considered an active student until you have not taken a class for one year. At that time your MASONLIVE account will be closed as part of our regular closure process and your subscription will end. Alumni after December 2010 will retain their email accounts.

What happens to Office when I am no longer eligible or I deactivate a device?

    When you are no longer eligible or deactivate a device all Office 365 ProPlus installs will enter a reduced functionality mode. You will not lose any documents created. If you are no longer eligible at that point you may purchase your own copy from a retail store or you may opt to uninstall it.

What password do I use to log in to Office 365 ProPlus?

    You will use your MASONLIVE Microsoft Account information to activate your Office 365 ProPlus software.

OneDrive for Business

What is OneDrive for Business (OneDrive)?

    OneDrive for Business provides a place in the cloud where you can store, share and collaborate on your files.

Who is eligible?

    All current Mason students receive access to the service. Alumni are not eligible for the service.

What are the benefits?

    OneDrive is useful for accessing your data from anywhere you have an internet connection as well as from various mobile devices. OneDrive offers 1 TB of storage as well as real-time collaboration.

How do I access OneDrive from a browser?

    There are two ways to access OneDrive:

    • Using a web browser via Outlook on the Web
    • Via a mobile device using the OneDrive app

What is the difference between OneDrive and OneDrive for Business?

    OneDrive for Business is part of Mason's agreement with Microsoft and is covered by university policy.

    OneDrive is Microsoft's consumer version and is used for personal use and is not endorsed by Mason.

Can I put sensitive data on OneDrive?

    No. To comply with the university's policy on data stewardship, no sensitive or restricted data is allowed on the service.

How do I share a file/folder?

How do I check my storage usage in OneDrive?

    1. Log in to your Office 365 account
    2. Click on the Office 365 app button OWA waffle icon in the upper left corner
    3. Select the settings gear icon
    4. Choose Site Settings
    5. Select Storage Metrics

Can I backup my entire computer system to OneDrive?

    No. OneDrive should NOT be used to back up your computer.

Is there a file size limit?

    Depending on the web browser you use, you can upload files up to 10 GB in size.

If I already use another cloud storage tool, should I still use OneDrive for Business?

    OneDrive for Business is the only cloud storage service that is endorsed by Mason.

What other help can I get for OneDrive?

    Microsoft offers a wide selection of instructional guides, videos, and additional resources to help you get started using the OneDrive for Business. (These materials are hosted by Microsoft, Inc.):

What happens if I delete a file? Can it be recovered?

    If you delete a file stored in OneDrive for Business, it will be in your OneDrive for business recycle bin for 30 days.

    Note: ITS and Microsoft cannot recover OneDrive for Business files.

What happens to my OneDrive files when I leave Mason?

    When you stop taking classes for Mason, you will lose access to your OneDrive files.

    Note: It is your responsibility to remove any files you'd like to retain before you leave.

Should I use the OneDrive for Business sync client?

    No. The synchronization tool provided by Microsoft is not supported at this time. ITS will re-evaluate the tool at a later date.

Who can I collaborate with using Office Online?

    Users can collaborate with both Mason and non-Mason users.

How do I disable OneDrive prompts when working with email?

    1. Log in to your Office 365 account
    2. Click on the Office 365 app button OWA waffle icon in the upper left corner
    3. Select the settings gear icon
    4. Choose Mail
    5. Select Mail -> Attachment Options -> Attachment Preferences
    6. Change the settings based on your preference

    Other areas of the product are supported directly by Microsoft and may be found within the applications themselves.

I accidently deleted something in my MASONLIVE account. How can I get it back?

    By default, when something is deleted, it is placed in the Deleted Items folder. Items remain in the Deleted Items folder for 30 days by default. If you need to recover an item deleted more than 30 days ago or if you emptied your Deleted Items, items are recoverable for an additional 14 days by right-clicking on the Deleted Items folder and selecting Recover Deleted Items from within Outlook Web App.

Will I receive daily Spam Quarantine digest messages?

    Yes, you will receive IronPort Spam Quarantine digests daily (when you have messages that were marked as Spam). However, you will also notice that Microsoft will also mark messages as Spam. Those messages will not be included in the IronPort Spam Quarantine — you can find those in the Junk folder. If you would like to edit your IronPort spam filtering you can login on IronPort.
